Presented are the results of effective cooperation between a scientific organization and a production plant in creating new technologies of manufacturing critical large-tonnage engineering iron castings. It is shown that on the basis of gained experience, new joint design, material science and technological developments using the existing production facilities there are all grounds for the production at OAO ‘Petrozavodskmash’ of largetonnage engineering castings weighing up to 120 t from irons of various grades.

Titov A.Y., Gerasimov S.P., Palachev V.A., Deyev V.B. Mechanism of bonding between burn-on preventing coating and a cold-hardening sand mold
A disadvantage of cold-hardening sand (CHS) molds is the burn-on To eliminate it, burn-on preventing coatings (BPC) are used, however, their application distorts its relief. The relief distortion can be eliminated, if the coating is applied to the pattern surface, and then joined to the cold-hardening sand mold. Suitable as such BPC is a suspension based on ethyl silicate that securely bonds to a CHS mold. But, the mechanism of originating a strong bond is not quite clear. Proposed is a possible mechanism of originating a strong bond between BPC based on ethyl silicate binder and a CHS mold. Selected is the suspension viscosity allowing a uniform BPC on the mold surface.

One of the gas turbine enginecast blades production technologydevelopment tendency is the increase of the quantity of blades producedwithin one melting. To make this possible, it is necessary to use melting and casting units with increased alloy capacity and special gating systems which allows producing a large amount of blades. In this article we developed the gating system for simultaneously castingof up to 48 blades. It was done using the simulation of filling and solidification processes. To test the gating system, a block of 24 blades was cast using the ALD VIM20 furnace. The blades did not have significant casting defects.

Piirainen V.Y. Manufacture and structure of material in church-going bells of the cathedral belfry of the Rostov Kremlin
The article discusses the uniqueness of sounding of the church-going bells of Rostov the Great belfry, from the point of view of the author, a foundry engineer experienced in the development of technology and manufacture of large-size castings. The modern material science views and ideas of metals degradation and its impact on the acoustic characteristics of metal items and cast bells, in particular, allowed the author to advance a hypothesis of self-development of the resonance features of the church-going bells of the Assumption belfry of the Rostov Kremlin. Cast in the second half of the XVII century by the Russian masters Flor Terentyev and Filipp Andreyev the bells “Sysoi” (1688), “Swan” (1682) and “Polyunctuous” (1683) still amaze with their exceptional sounding and melodiousness.
