Melting. Melt Treatment

Malinovsky V.S. et al. Melting Aluminum Alloys in DC Arc Furnaces of the New Generation. Status and Outlooks for the New Technology
The article discusses results of a comparative technical-and-economic analysis of the production of aluminum-based alloys in furnaces of different types including DC arc furnaces (DCAF) of the new generation designed and patented by NTF EKTA's specialists. The comparison has been carried out taking into account the costs necessary for the production of high-quality metal including out-of-furnace treatment of melt, and reflects actual indices of the metal production costs.
The long-term use of that melting equipment - DCAF - confirms the expediency of its application for making aluminum alloys, both from primary metals and secondary raw materials. Due to the high technical-and-economic effectiveness of DCAFs, high quality of alloys made and products from those alloys, one of the most important problems of the existing enterprises in improving their performance, competitiveness and making high-quality products is resolved.

Malyarov A.I. et al. Melting Cast Iron Chips in High-Frequency Crucible Furnaces
Use of chips in melting in induction crucible furnaces allows producing irons at minimal cost, however, there is no information about the practical use of that process. Work done at MAMI made it possible to conclude that a high-frequency furnace of high specific capacity can be used for remelting chips with insignificant melting loss and high furnace efficiency.

Rogova V.P. et al. Effect of Out-of-Furnace Treatment on the Chemical Composition and Properties of Cast Steel for Railway Car Building
Mechanical properties, chemical composition, microstructure and nonmetallic inclusions in grade 20GL steel made by serial technology and finally treated in the AKP unit are given. Effect of the out-of-furnace treatment in the AKP unit on the sulfur content, impact toughness of specimens with U- and V-notches at test temperatures of +20°C and -60°C and on the metal's contamination with nonmetallic inclusions is shown.

Modern Materials

Kulbovsky I.K. et al. The Nature of Graphite Crystallization Centers When Inoculating Cast Iron with Graphitizing Inoculants and Graphite
Investigations into the physico-chemical processes running in molten iron and the influence of the type of charging materials on the cast iron structure show that graphite crystallization centers in the melt are not nonmetallic inclusions, but graphite inclusions, underdissolved in the melt, getting thereto from the charge and inoculants, or its newly formed microinclusions under the influence of factors that graphitize cast iron.

Titov V.I. High-Strength Structural Steel S700
The article discusses the promising structural steel of the new generation S700 having a great potential for application in many industry branches - building, mechanical engineering, petrochemistry, railway car building, in the manufacture of containers, etc. Steel can be welded by any methods, is very well fit for subsequent machining. The price of S700 steel is at the level of steels of grade 10KhSND with a (1.5 - 2 times) better complex of properties.

21st Century Technologies

Semyonov V.N. et al. Plant and Technology for Processing Solid Industrial and Domestic Waste
The base of the proposed technology for incineration of SDW and equipment is the barbotage of slag bath with high-temperature products of natural gas burning. The process runs due to fireboxes in the sidewalls of the furnace, in which the natural gas is burned in a mixture with cold or heated to 500°C air, the temperature of combustion products at the exit being 1,450-1,550°C. The fireboxes operate in a wide range of controlling the gas and air consumption, creating in the slag bath oxidizing and reducing atmosphere. For eliminating the emission of harmful gas components a system of filters and use of fluxes during the SDW combustion are provided. For preventing the creation of harmful dioxines, a refrigerator is installed at the exit of the furnace.
The technology and equipment have no counterparts.

Lyubimov A.A. et al. Electromagnetic Method of Producing Ingots
Investigations into the electromagnetic crystallizer (EMC) casting process have shown the following.
When casting into EMC segregation is significantly reduced, which contributes to improvement of ingot surface quality. The ingot structure obtained by the EM method is characterized by homogeneous chemical composition, thin and uniform crystal structure, high ductile properties.
The EMC casting allows increasing the casting rate by 15 to 30%, reducing the cooling medium consumption by 1.5 to 2.0 times, improving the working conditions, achieving high technical and economic results, enhancing the technological properties of metal during deformation of an ingot. For achieving the maximum effect by using EMC casting it is necessary to carry it out together with electro-slag remelting in order obtain ingot metal not only free of harmful impurities, which are bound in the slag bath, but also fine-grained.

Yakimov V.I. et al. Effect of Evacuation on the Number of Defects in AL19 Alloy Castings Detected by X-ray and Luminescent Check
Analysis results of melts treated with manganese chloride and argon, and also in vacuum, are given. Use of evacuation (AL19 alloy) reduces casting rejects. The total number of detected defects when using X-ray and luminescent check has been reduced by about 4.5 times.

Kargapoltsev V.P. Thyristor Regulator as a Means of Saving Energy in Heating Systems

Muravyov V.I. et al. Investigation into the Structure and Chemical Homogeneity of a Production Spectral Standard Specimen of Al-Si Alloys
The work is directed at investigation and selection of an optimum metal mold for the production of standard specimens and their use in a complete set with State standard specimens for operative and high-quality determination of the chemical composition of Al alloys. A "crested" shape metal mold was selected. Use of specimens cast in such metal mold allowed reducing labor intensity, improving the analysis quality and speeding up delivery of melts.
