Thion G. The Cupola and Modern Foundry Production
The cupola was for centuries a simple shaft furnace without stack gas treatment or automation. Today's fully equipped cupolas produce good cast iron while recycling old scrap, and they completely satisfy al environmental requirements. They can recycle almost anything: briquetted turnings, galvanized sheet, urban wastes, old tyres, and various kinds of scrap. Cupolas have a place in sustainable development; they can contribute actively to it. Key words: cupola, charge, hot and cold blast, coke.

Khripchenko S.Yu., Nikulin L.V., Dolgikh V.M., Denisov S.A. Magnetohydrodynamic control over the formation of small-size aluminum ingot structure
This paper discusses the principles of control over the formation of the alloy (Al-4,5%Zn) ingot structure during forced circulation of the melt in alternating magnetic fields and its solidification under controlled heat removal. Experimental results demonstrating the effect of MHD stirring mode on the extension of structural zones and the hardness and number of grains in the control area in the mid-part of the ingot are presented. The application areas where the proposed technology offers some real benefits are shown. Key words: aluminum ingot, magnetohydrodynamic effect, crystalline area, hardness, grain number.

Aksenenko A.Y., Bychkov S.A., Klimov V.N., Korobova N.V., Tarasov F.Y., Frizen V.E., Shevchenko S.Y. About Influence of Crystallization Parameters on Microstructure of Billets from Al-Casting Alloys for Thixocasting
A number of billets of aluminium casting alloys was obtained on laboratory melting and casting complex. Some parameters such as temperature of melt, time and frequency of electromagnetic stirring were changed. Microstructure, porosity, form-factor and grain size of ?-phase were investigated. Keywords:globular microstructure, crystallization, porosity, thixocasting, form factor, electromagnetic stirring.

Mishukov A.V., Krivenko G.G., Folomeikin Y.I., Alipov A.N., Zarudniy Y.V. Inoculating Treatment of Liquid Metal with Magnetoimpulse Activator
A trial lot of magnetic pulsed activators. Primary tests of the activator operation carried outin order to estimate its heat shock resistance that occurs when being immersed in liquid melt and its resistance to stress produced by magnetic pulsed processing of the liquid melt have showed that the metal structure can be improved only by magnetic pulsed processing (without adding powder modifiers or other additional substances). Further investigations and analysis of their results allowed us to determine the mechanism of liquid metal modification by electromagnetic pulse processing. Key words: pulsed magnetic field, modification, modification intensification.

Malkova M.Y. Use of Silica Sol in Ladle Linings
Shown is the possibility of using a mixture of silica sol in a mixture with aluminum oxides, silicon oxides, iron oxides and calcium oxides in composing masonry mortars. Optimal sol contents in masonry mortars have been established to provide the required material strength. Key words: silica sol, superdispersed powders, masonry mortars.

Prosviryakov A.S., Alabin A.N., Slavina I.S., Sagalova T.B. Strengthening Aluminum Alloy with Zirconium by Mechanical Alloying
Investigated was the effect of duration of treatment in a planetary-type ball grinder of Al-2Cu-1.6Mn-0.4Zr (%) alloy together with Al-10Zr master alloy providing a gain of 0.2% Zr, and 5 vol.% nanodiamond on the strengthening of the material obtained. The treatment lasted 1…20 hrs. The microhardness of formed granules of composite material amounted to 200...300 HV. A two-step anneal after the 20-hour treatment does not result in any noticeable loss of strength, which shows the material's heat resistance. Key words: metal-matrix composite, precipitation strengthening, mechanical alloying, microhardness, aluminum, zirconium.

Tacheci J., Korobeynikov V., Kolesov A. Energy-saving thermal units of new generation
Modern thermal equipment can and should be energy efficient, effective, safe and environmentally friendly. This is achieved by the use of modern materials, the use of efficient heating systems, high degree of automation, structural adaptability. Keywords: Energy-saving, efficiency, safety, environment.

Ten E.B. Evaluation of Filtration Refining of Liquid Metals. Part III
Methods of calculating the initial minimum allowable filter temperature, filter size, and designing the filtration process, as well as a gating system with a filter are presented. Proposed are methods of evaluating the refining capability of filters, which allows comparing filters of different types by an objective indicator, and choosing them with respect to design features and variation possibilities. Key words: filter, liquid metal, refining, nonmetallic inclusions.

Busygin S.L., Sinichkin A.M., Tokmin A.M. The electrodes of the resistance welding received by a combined method of casting and forging
Methods of making electrodes for contact welding have been analyzed, and the difficulty of their manufacture has been evaluated. The electrode melting and hot forging technology has been fine-tuned. Effect of nanostructured chromium particles on the hardness, electrical conductivity and durability of contact welding electrodes has been studied. Key words: casting, hot forging, nanostructured particles, microstructure, contact welding, hardness, specific electric conductivity, durability.

Zlenko M.A., Zabednov P.V. Additive Technologies in an Experimental Foundry. Part I. Casting of Metals and Plastics Using Synthesis Patterns and Synthesis Molds
The article gives an analysis of computer technologies used in blank production, in particular, castings production, allowing to drastically reduce the time of launching new products. These technologies are of special importance in making foundry patterns, molds and tooling. Key words: additive technologies, rapid prototyping, tooling, mold, pattern, polystyrene.
